About the Role
Reporting to the Site Operations Manager, the Shift Manager (Days) is responsible for leading and developing a team of Production Operatives to consistently deliver Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost and People objectives across the David Berryman manufacturing operation.
The role is accountable for driving operational excellence through strong leadership, effective resource management and continuous improvement initiatives, while fostering a culture of accountability, engagement and high performance. Working collaboratively with Planning, Engineering, Quality and wider operational teams, the Shift Manager ensures production targets are achieved whilst maintaining the highest standards of food safety, employee safety, compliance and customer satisfaction.
As part of the operational leadership team, the Shift Manager will play a key role in developing team capability, supporting business growth and delivering sustainable performance improvements across the site.
As a Shift Manager you will:
Health, Safety & Environment
- Drive a positive health and safety culture through visible leadership and role modelling of best practices.
- Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory and company health and safety requirements.
- Lead accident investigations, risk assessments and corrective action implementation to reduce risk and improve site safety performance.
Quality & Food Safety
- Champion GMP, HACCP and food safety standards across all production activities.
- Maintain audit readiness and promote a right-first-time culture.
- Manage non-conformance investigations and ensure timely completion of CAPA actions.
- Escalate food safety or product quality risks immediately and implement effective containment actions where required.
Leadership & People Management
- Lead, coach and motivate a team of Production Operatives to achieve operational objectives.
- Manage employee performance, attendance and employee relations matters consistently and fairly.
- Promote THG values, behaviours and a culture of respect, accountability and engagement.
- Lead structured shift handovers and daily communication meetings to ensure alignment on priorities and targets.
Training & Development
- Maintain team skills matrices, training plans and competency assessments.
- Ensure effective induction and onboarding programmes for new starters.
- Drive cross-training and multi-skilling initiatives to improve operational flexibility.
- Develop succession plans and identify future leaders within the operation.
- Conduct regular one-to-one meetings, coaching sessions and development reviews.
Operational Delivery
- Deliver daily production plans while ensuring schedule adherence and operational efficiency.
- Optimise labour, material and equipment utilisation to maximise productivity.
- Work collaboratively with Planning, Engineering and Quality teams to achieve production objectives.
- Lead root cause analysis and problem-solving activities to minimise downtime and operational losses.
Cost & Performance
- Drive continuous reduction of waste, downtime and process variation.
- Monitor and report on key operational KPIs including labour efficiency, yield and performance metrics.
Continuous Improvement
- Foster a culture of lean manufacturing and operational excellence.
- Encourage and support team-led improvement initiatives that enhance site performance and capability.
What skills and experience do I need for this role?
- Minimum 5 years' leadership experience within FMCG manufacturing, food production or a similar operational environment.
- Strong knowledge of food safety systems including GMP and HACCP.
- Demonstrable people management experience, including coaching, performance management and employee engagement.
- Experience driving continuous improvement initiatives and operational performance enhancements.
- Strong organisational, communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office applications and operational reporting systems.
Qualifications
- Relevant manufacturing, food production or operational management qualification desirable.
- Food Safety and HACCP certification desirable.
- Health and Safety qualification (IOSH or equivalent) desirable.
- Fluent English communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent leadership and influencing skills.
